ADHM has all the classic elements that make up a Karan Johar film. The beautiful locations, beautiful clothes and beautiful performances by Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai & Fawad Afzal Khan, everything BEAUTIFUL!
The film was shot in some authentic locations of London, Paris, Vienna and Lucknow.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil traces the life of Ayan Sayengar (Ranbir Kapoor) who is “private-jet-type” rich and is living a life dictated by others wishes — pursuing an MBA as a singer cannot keep his dad’s business floating and being in ‘love’ because that’s what his mercenary girlfriend Lisa (Lisa Hayden) wants him to believe. Then arrives Alizeh (Anushka Sharma), a very sorted and mature woman who knows exactly what is wrong with her life, knows how to handle her “weakness” and how to enjoy life.
Ayan and Alizeh become thick friends after an awkward hook up attempt at a party. She is the one who makes Ayan become the real person that he is — one who enjoys cheap Bollywood songs, loves to sing and dances like no one is watching. We bet you haven’t seen Ranbir in anything like this before, not Rockstar and certainly not Tamasha.
There is this intense passion/love Alizeh nurtures for her ex-boyfriend Ali (Fawad Khan), but we do not get to see her story. Saba (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) is a divorcee poetess who meets a heart-broken Ayaan and falls in love. Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt make a small guest appearance.
The pre-interval is when Ayan visits Lucknow to attend Alizeh’s wedding is musical, artsy, cute, heart wrenching and par excellence. Those scenes will surely make you roll some tears out.
The emotional turbulence in the movie starts when Ayan wants to be in a relationship with Alizeh. These honest feelings are what make the movie worth a watch. The emotional weight make the gloss and glamour shine even brighter.
Operating the world within that’s familiar to Kjo, good looking NRIs disconnected from the trails and troubles of us normal folks, Johar crafts a surprisingly sensitive and genuinely moving drama. Biggest strength is unarguably the terrific performances of two leads.
Anushka Sharma is familiar, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan catches the eye but it is Ranbir Kapoor who lifts the film. He is terrific as the fellow who crumbles, cries and shoves his aching heart on his sleeve. Ranbir walks away with top honours delivering a performance that doesn’t miss a beat from comical to heart broken, his face is a canvas of complex emotions and he makes his every moment on screen count.
Over 2 hours and 30 mins, Kjo puts his protagonists under emotional ringer.
Manish Malhotra’s costumes and Pritam’s music are another noteworthy aspect of the flick. Controversies surrounding the movie aside, ADHM will be a good addition to the movie collections for the broken-hearted.
Here are some epic dialogues that I’m absolutely in love with
1. Ek tarfa pyar ki taqat hi kuch aur hoti hai… auron ke rishton ki tarah yeh do logon mein nahi bat’ti… sirf mera haq hai ispe… sirf mera
Karan Johar the director and writer of ADHM. Also a television personality, producer, actor, costume designer, screen writer for many amazing films of Bollywood has been my major inspiration for his abilities to multi task, the razor sharp tongue, wit, positive aura & a mouth of silver that he’s got, I admire Kjo from the bottom of my heart! #FanforLife
Summing up, ADHM is a celebration of Love, Lust, Friendship & Heart breaks!
From beats to bits, ADHM has got Karan Johar’s stamp all over it.
